For the second year in a row, Timothée Chalamet will shine once again this holiday season with a R-rated film. Marty Supreme, A24’s fictional biopic based on ping-pong legend Marty Reisman, will be released on Christmas Day in the United States, starring Chalamet. Directed by Josh Safdie, the film is considered one of the company’s most expensive original productions to date.

This release date highlights the studio’s confidence in both Safdie’s project and Chalamet’s power to attract a wide audience. Over the years, the actor’s films have become known for their inventive marketing campaigns, and consequently, Marty Supreme follows that same strategy. Two campaigns are currently dominating social media: a Zoom-call skit that generated the catchphrase “Marty Supreme Christmas Day,” and a fashion push built around a now-viral jacket worn by artists, athletes, and other celebrities. Ultimately, these efforts have broadened the film’s exposure and helped extend Chalamet’s phenomenon in December.
Early critical response has been notably positive. For instance, Variety’s Ramin Setoodeh described the film as “Uncut Gems meets The Catcher in the Rye meets Jerry Maguire, carried by Timothée Chalamet’s best performance yet.” Likewise, Matt Neglia of Next Best Picture praised it as “sprawling and electrifying sports epic bursting with vitality from the first frame to the last [… ] Timothée Chalamet […] throws himself into the role with total commitment, emotionally and physically.”
The award potential for Timothée Chalamet
With such momentum, Marty Supreme is already generating notable attention. Its Christmas Day release, often reserved for more family-friendly productions, signals a strong conviction in both the commercial appeal and critical potential the movie could have. Industry analysts have begun speculating about how the film and Chalamet could be serious contenders for major awards. As a result, this potentially could bring the actor closer than ever to his first Oscar.
