“My idols growing up where men. Why it cannot be the opposite way?” said Aitana Bonmatí in her lastest interview with Manu Carreño. The winner of the 2025 Ballon d´Or has grew up playing in FC Barcelonas youth academy, a club that has become a global reference in the promotion and professionalization of women’s football. Over the last decade, Barça has transformed its women’s team into a powerhouse, leading La Liga F and lifting three UEFA Women’s Champions League titles, achievements that have redefined the standards of the sport in Spain and Europe.

The Catalan club made a decisive bet back in 1988, when it began professionalizing their women’s team. This commitment included investing in infrastructure, hiring specialized coaching staff, the creation of a competitive youth academy, and the establishment of  dignified working conditions for female players. Decades of sustained investment has resulted in a consolidated team that outperforms the other Spanish teams and has set a successful path to follow. Today Barça Femení already encounters 10 Spanish leagues, 3 Champions League, 11 Queens cups, 11 Catalunya Cups and 5 Spains Super-cup. This accomplishments place them as one of the most important teams of the European stage, fighting or the highest positions against clubs such as Chelsea FC, Olympique Lyonnais or Bayern Munich.

With excellent communication through social media, they have brought a still minority sport, closer to a large audience, creating in just a few years an strong and devoted community. The high level of the team has forced other Spanish clubs to increase their investment in order to compete against FC Barcelona leveling up the Liga F making it one of the highest-level women’s football leagues in the world.

On a social level, Barça is a club committed to numerous social causes, and through its women’s team it seeks to fight against the gender gap and educate younger generations  in equality, respect, devotion and effort through sport.
