We’ve all heard it, “Oh, you’re Irish?” “Me too! My mom’s great grandfather’s second cousin is from Dublin!”

And what better day to boast about your Irish heritage (even if it is 0.2%) than the highly anticipated day of good old St. Patrick himself?!

History of St. Patrick

On the 17th of March every year, the Irish (and also some boujee Americans) celebrate St. Patrick’s day. It is a day of sipping , singing, and cursing! But, what is the importance of St. Patrick, and what did he do to get a national holiday designated to him, you may ask.

If only it was possible to indulge in a great story about a heroic day of independence for the Irish folk from the power of England. However, this is not the case and, unfortunately, the Irish are still waiting for their full independence. So, until that day comes they shall celebrate a potentially fictional tale of a fine fellow in green overalls, who apparently banished all of the snakes in Ireland. Low and behold, a national holiday was born!

This year’s celebrations

It is often argued that St. Patricks Day is celebrated much more internationally than at home on the Emerald Isle. Therefore, it is the duty of the Irish community in Barcelona to try and test this argument for themselves.

“The Irish were born to leave, otherwise the rest of the world would have no pubs”

An interesting and accurate quotation from the newly released film “Belfast”, Barcelona is no exception, with over 25 Irish pubs in the city! Without a doubt, the Paddys of Barcelona will be painting the city green this year! Don’t believe us? Have a look at how our pals at Flaherty’s are preparing for this year’s celebrations.

Instagram will load in the frontend.

We caught up with Aoife Flynn, a barmaid in Flahertys Irish pub located in the Gothic Quarter to see just how they are preparing for the day. Take a look!
