Hi! My Name is Nienke and I am a Dutch student expierencing the student life in Barcelona for the past 6 months now! And I have noticed major differences compared to back home. Marie & Svea started their exchange this February. They both arrived towards the end of January. Marie, Svea & me are all Dutch students in Barcelona and we would love to share our insights and thoughts about Barcelona!

Starting your Erasmus journey is very exciting, but it can be overwhelming as well. Suddenly you will have to move to another place, find an apartment, meet new people and get to find your way around a new city.

But do not worry! You are not alone, all of the Erasmus students must go through this process and it will absolutely be worth the trouble.

Tips & Tricks from Dutch Students in Barcelona

In this podcast we give a few tips & tricks. Such as getting the T-Jove when you arrive in Barcelona. This sis a ticket which will only cost you 44.-€, and it lasts for 4 months. During these 4 months you are able to travel unlimited with all provided public transport in Barcelona. And trust me, you will get your worth out of this insanely fast.

Following, we also want to inform you that looking for an apartment as soon as possible is crucial. Finding housing is an overwhelming process and finding out in which neighbourhood you want to live can also take some time.

To show you the neighbourhoods in Barcelona, here is a easy map:

Neighbourhoods of Barcelona

Before coming here, we definitely recommend reading into which neighbourhoods suit your needs most. Also, keep in mind that the University Abat Oliba is all the way at the top in Sarria – Sant Gervasi, which could take around an hour to reach if you are staying in Barceloneta.

Social Life as a Dutch Student in Barcelona

Being an Erasmus student in Barcelona is a like the complete opposite of being a student at the HU in the Netherlands. Here, the social life lays way higher compared to back home. I must admit that I also live a bit far from the city, but I rarely go out or hear other (also Erasmus) classmates talk about that they go out. Here… some students go clubbing almost every night. As an Erasmus student here you can experience the club life Barcelona has to offer to the fullest. You can join Erasmus groups where they offer discounts on entries or drinks at bars.

However, this could also make some feel pressured into going out every night. In the podcast we also mention it is more than okay to take a few rest moments for yourself.

Last but not least, despite studying in one of the most amazing cities in Europe, you are still studying. You will still have to put effort in the studies & attend the classes!
