Football isn’t just great for physical fitness; it also has significant benefits for mental health. Whether you’re playing with your mates or joining a league, it provides an effective way to relieve stress, boost your mood, and improve overall well-being.

Here in Barcelona where football is embedded into the culture, Celebreak offer an opportunity for anyone to get out the house, put their boots on and play football. Celebreak is a company that connects anyone wanting to play football from locals to tourists, offering pick up games, leagues, tournaments and more. They provide pitches all over the city of Barcelona.

There is a strong sense of community at the Celebreak games. The people running it will referee the games and even get involved if one side is short on numbers and sometimes players from both sides will stay after for a beer and a chat. Ismael, a worker for Celebreak is very fond of the community Celebreak creates, he said: “I think most people that come to play with Celebreak need this space to decompress from their busy lives. I can see how people’s attitudes change after playing a game or sharing a beer after the game.”

According to healthandfitness.org out of 1,158 studies examined, 89% found a statistically significant, positive association between physical activity or exercise and mental health. Luke, a regular at Celebreak games recognises this correlation. He said: “it takes your mind off stuff for an hour or two. When you’re playing football with your mates all your problems go away really”.
